Foresters Claim MWC Title, Complete League Schedule with Perfect Record
Team defeats Monmouth and Illinois College over the weekend

Tanya Lopez scored the first goal of both weekend games.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s soccer team clinched the 2004 Midwest Conference championship with a 4-2 victory at home over Monmouth College on Saturday (October 16). The Foresters also defeated visiting Illinois College 5-0 on Sunday (October 17) to complete their league schedule with a perfect 9-0-0 record. The team is 13-2-0 overall.

Lake Forest wasted little time before taking the early lead against Monmouth. Senior Kristen Fink’s (Menasha, WI/St. Mary Central) shot on goal in the third minute was saved but junior Tanya Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X) put in the rebound for her 10th goal of the season. The Fighting Scots tied the score at the 35:49 mark and the score was still 1-1 at halftime.

Senior Erika Koesling (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch) gave the Foresters the lead for good in the 50th minute with her fifth goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Fink scored her sixth of the year off an assist from sophomore Angela Rubino (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) to make the score 3-1. Senior Lauren McHugh’s (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) ninth goal of 2004 gave the home team a comfortable 4-1 advantage with roughly 30 minutes to play.

Freshman Sofia Pappas (Park Ridge, IL/Loyola Academy) recorded six saves and surrendered just the first-half goal and another on a penalty kick with only 15 seconds remaining in the contest.

Pappas recorded her third shutout of the season on Sunday and improved her record on the year to 4-0-0.

Lopez again scored the game’s first goal, her 11th of the season, at 6:53 off an assist from junior Melissa Stevenson (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge). The rest of the opening period was scoreless.

Stevenson scored at the 51:41 mark off a McHugh assist and again at 66:01 off a pass from Lopez. Lopez and Fink each earned an assist on Stevenson’s third of the game and team-high 13th of the season at 68:54. Freshman Elizabeth Huff (Dodgeville, WI/Dodgeville) weaved through the Lady Blue defense and scored the game’s final goal, her fourth of the year, at 79:23.

Lake Forest will play its final regular season game at UW-Whitewater on Saturday (October 23) at noon.

Along with the conference championship, Lake Forest earned the right to host the four-team MWC Tournament in two weeks (October 30-31). The tournament’s semifinals will be played on Nick Wasylik Field, the team’s home for many years, on Saturday and the final will be played on the synthetic turf of the newly renovated Farwell Field on Sunday.
