LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Lake Forest College women's soccer team pulled out a pair of important one-goal victories against fellow Midwest Conference members over the weekend (October 25-26). The Foresters won 3-2 at Grinnell College on Saturday and blanked Beloit College 1-0 at home on Sunday to improve to 7-8-1 overall and 5-2-0 in league play. Grinnell fell to 13-3-0 overall and 6-2-0 in conference games and Beloit is now 6-9-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the MWC.

Grinnell scored first on Saturday in the game's 22nd minute. Lake Forest tied the score on an unassisted goal by freshman Caroline Stearns (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) with 5:02 to play in the first half. It was Stearns' second goal of the season.

An unassisted goal by Katie Rice (Centennial, Colo./Eaglecrest) at 53:25 gave the Foresters the lead and the margin doubled less than eight minutes later when sophomore Mackenzie Yates (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Preparatory School) netted what turned out to be the official game-winning goal. Her second score of the season was assisted by junior Jocelyn Maneval (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson). The Pioneers pulled to within a goal with 2:24 remaining on the clock but were unable to complete the comeback.

Lake Forest senior Susan Hedrick (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) recorded five saves in the contest for her first collegiate victory. She stopped all five shots on goal from Beloit on Sunday for her second win and lowered her goals against average to 1.62.

The Foresters had the heavy winds at their backs for Sunday's first period but were unable to capitalize, despite out-shooting the Buccaneers 15-3 in the period.

Beloit attempted nine shots and Lake Forest four during the second half but one of the Foresters' four attempts went from Rice's foot into the goal at 67:27. It was Rice's team-high-tying fourth score of the year and the assist by freshman Isabel Brown (Tucson, Ariz./Tuscon Magnet) was her first career point.

The Foresters will finish up the regular season with a pair of MWC home games next weekend (November 1-2). Lake Forest will host Illinois College at noon on Saturday and Monmouth College at the same time on Sunday. The Foresters would qualify for the four-team conference tournament with a victory in either game. Live video webcasts of both contests will be available at www.midwestconference.tv.
