Foresters Eliminated From MWC Tourney in Shootout
Grinnell advances to play Lawrence in championship game

DEPERE, WI - 120 minutes was not enough to separate Lake Forest College and Grinnell College when the two teams squared off on October 7th at Grinnell as the game ended in a 2-2 tie. On Friday (October 27th) in the Midwest Conference Tournament Semifinal, 120 minutes still wasn't enough as the teams were deadlocked 1-1. The conference uses a shootout after two overtimes to break a tie in the tournament, and that is where Grinnell was finally able to separate itself from the Foresters by scoring on their first three penalty kicks while stopping the first three from Lake Forest.

Grinnell's only goal in regulation was scored by Amy Walters less than 10 minutes into the game. The teams switched directions for the second half and Lake Forest took advantage of the wind at its back when, with 25 minutes to go in regulation, senior Erin Sovick (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) scored her 7th goal of the year on junior Stacy Gunstream's (Fort Collins, CO/Rocky Mountain) team-leading 9th assist. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half as well as two 15-miunute overtime periods before the game was decided by the shootout.

Head Coach T.R. Bell led
the Foresters to a record
of 11-4-2 this year, the best
of his 4-year career.
Officially the game is counted as a tie on each team's record. Lake Forest finishes the 2000 campaign with an overall record of 11-4-2 and a regular season MWC record of 7-1-1. The overall record is the best of Forester Head Coach T.R. Bell's four-year career.

Grinnell advances to the Midwest Conference championship game to be played Saturday (October 28th) at 2:00 PM. They will take on Lawrence University, who defeated the host school St. Norbert on Friday, also in a shootout. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament beginning Wednesday (November 1st).
