FORESTERS WIN THEIR WAY BACK INTO THE MWC
RACE
It was just one goal, but
it was a big one. At Beloit on Sunday, junior Kim
Sponsel (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa High School) scored the game's only
goal at the 1:36 mark of overtime to give Lake Forest a 1-0 win and even
their Midwest Conference record at 3-3-0. Grinnell and Carroll, two of
Lake Forest's conference blemishes, are 6-0-1 and 4-2-0, respectively,
and atop the MWC. St. Norbert, who beat LF 5-0 on September 19th, is 3-2-0,
while Beloit fell to 3-3-0, Lawrence is 2-1-1, and Monmouth is 2-1-0. The
Foresters will face Monmouth this Sunday after a Saturday contest with
Illinois College and before finishing the regular season at home versus
Lawrence on October 23rd. The top four teams qualify for the season-ending
conference tournament, which is hosted by the league's top team.
Freshman Rachel
LaFin (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West H.S.) had four saves to secure
her second shutout of the season against Beloit. Sponsel's goal was her
team-high fourth of the season and was assisted by Beth
Kohr (Franklin, OH/Franklin H.S.), the team's second leading scorer
with seven points.
On Saturday, Lake Forest ran
into red-hot Grinnell and their high-scoring forward Amy Walters, who struck
first at the 3:13 mark. The Foresters tied the score on a goal by Kohr,
assisted by Sponsel. Walter's then scored in the 69th minute and Grinnell
added another goal two minutes later in insure the 3-1 win. LaFin had 13
saves in the losing effort.
