Team is now 4-0-2 in MWC play

Anna Wiederhold's first career goal tied the game on Saturday.
BELOIT, WI - The Lake Forest College women’s soccer team hosted and defeated Grinnell College Saturday (October 8) morning before traveling to Beloit the following afternoon and playing to a 1-1 tie. The Foresters are now 7-2-2 overall this season and 4-0-2 in Midwest Conference games. Grinnell fell to 7-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the MWC and Beloit is now 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.

The Pioneers took the early lead on Saturday with a goal at 12:31 and another at 26:38. They out-shot Lake Forest 17-3 in the opening period.

The Foresters, however, pulled to within one just 4:51 into the second half on senior Melissa Stevenson’s (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) team-high 11th goal of the year. Classmate Tanya Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X) earned the assist and helped Stevenson pull to within one goal of Nicole Tarandy’s school record for a career. Freshman Anna Wiederhold (Fayetteville, OH/Wilmington) kicked in a deflection from the Grinnell defense at 79:35 to tie the score. It was the first goal of her career. Fellow freshman Jaymie Honold (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) also scored on a ball the Grinnell defense was unable to clear at 88:31 for the game winner. It was her third of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Kristyne Operzedek (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) saved 10 of 12 Pioneer shots on goal to earn the victory.

On Sunday, Operzedek allowed just one goal and recorded four saves in 110 minutes of play. She is now 3-2-2 on the season with a 1.36 goals against average.

Beloit scored the game’s first goal in the fourth minute of the contest. Lake Forest tied the score in the 28th minute on junior Becca Bride’s (Wilmot, NH/Kearsarge Regional) second goal of the season. Stevenson recorded the assist, her team-high sixth of the year, and is now just three shy of Tarandy’s career record in that category.

The Foresters out-shot the Buccaneers 22-11 in the contest but were unable to score a second goal.

Lake Forest will host the University of Chicago, the nation’s 17th-ranked team, Tuesday afternoon at 4:00. The Foresters will then continue their league schedule on the road next weekend (October 15-16). The team will play at Illinois College Saturday afternoon at 1:00 and at Monmouth College at 11:00 Sunday morning.
