"Foresters Loaded With Youth, Tradition In '99"

After qualifying for the Midwest Conference championship tournament for the fifth consecutive season and earning the right to host last year's tournament by winning the regular season title, the 1999 edition of the Forester women's soccer team has history on their side in their quest for a sixth straight conference post-season appearance.  But, with less than half of their starting lineup returning, most of the current Foresters haven't tasted that type of success.  Third-year Head Coach T.R. Bell, owner of a 21-13 career record, explains, "We're going to be extremely young and the majority of our lineup is wide-open at this point.  We just don't have a lot of experience returning.  This group will need to be more of a 'team' than any other team I've coached."
Last year's squad averaged 2.50 goals per contest (3.22 in conference games) and the two leading scorers from that team - Stacy Gunstream and Kim Sponsel -- are back.  Both were first-team All-Conference performers last season and give the Foresters a strong nucleus in the midfield.  Additionally, they appeared in the top five for MWC scoring leaders last season.  Gunstream, now a sophomore, led the conference in assists with ten in nine games, including two or more assists in four separate outings.  The bulk of the offense will be channeled through those two, and mainly Sponsel, a junior midfielder, according to Coach Bell.  "I feel comfortable with those two running our offense.  For us to be successful, Kim needs to get a lot of touches on the ball."  In the seven games in which Sponsel scored at least one point (including the six games she scored at least one goal), the Foresters were a perfect 7-0 last season.
Sophomore Jenny Berthiume (11 points - 5 goals and 1 assist in '98) and forward Beth Kohr, a junior who scored 10 points (4 goals and 2 assists) last year, round out the returning offensive starters.
Senior stopper Erica Ratliff is the lone returning starter from last season's defensive unit that was one of the stingiest in the Midwest, allowing just 1.37 goals per game, including a 0.56 average in conference play.  Coach Bell is hoping that sophomore Katy Gannon and junior Brandi Monroe will develop into quality, full-time starters.  Gannon, who played primarily as a reserve last season, will look to assume one of the starting marking back positions, while Monroe is a goalkeeper.  She appeared in six games last year and recorded a 2.37 goals against average.
"There will definitely be some growing pains for this team," Coach Bell added.  "Our success will be dependent upon how quickly we can come together as a unit.  Our goals are to be playing our best soccer and jelling as a team at tournament time.  Hopefully at that point we'll be in a position to keep playing."
