Team is now 6-0-0 in Midwest Conference play

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women’s soccer team won a pair of Midwest Conference games over the weekend (September 25-26). The Foresters triumphed 2-1 in double-overtime at defending league champion Grinnell College on Saturday and returned home to shut out Beloit College 3-0 on Sunday. Lake Forest is now 8-1-0 overall on the season and 6-0-0 in league play.

Grinnell took the early lead in Saturday’s contest, scoring off the left post in the game’s 12th minute. It turned out to be the only goal Forester goalkeeper Kristyne Operzedek (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) would allow all weekend. The sophomore tallied 15 saves on the day.

Junior Melissa Stevenson (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) finally tied the game with just 14:32 to play in regulation. The contest remained tied until the 118th minute when junior Tanya Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X) took a throw-in from senior Kristen Fink (Menasha, WI/St. Mary Central), turned, and sent the game-winner past the Pioneer goalie.

After a scoreless first half on Sunday, the Foresters took the lead on senior Lauren McHugh’s (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) fifth goal of the season at the 46:47 mark. Lopez headed in her seventh goal on the year at 65:41 off a cross from Stevenson. Finally, Stevenson scored for the sixth time this season at 73:44 off an assist from sophomore Angela Rubino (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park).

Operzedek needed just one save to record her second complete game shutout of the year and raise her record to 7-1-0.

Lake Forest will play a pair of non-conference home games this week. The Foresters will host Concordia University (WI) on Tuesday (September 28) at 4:30 p.m. and Carthage College on Saturday (October 2) at 11:00 a.m.
