Lake Forest Captures Sal Vaccaro Tournament Championship
Foresters win a pair of 4-0 games against Mt. Mercy and North Central

Aviva Landin scored the first two goals of both games
NAPERVILLE, IL - The Lake Forest College women's soccer team started its 2003 season with a pair of victories at North Central College's Sal Vaccaro Tournament over the weekend (September 5-6). The Foresters won a 4-0 decision over Mount Mercy College Friday night and then defeated North Central by the same score in Saturday's championship game.

In the win over Mount Mercy, senior forward Aviva Landin (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) scored the only goal of the first half off a pass from sophomore forward Melissa Stevenson (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge). Stevenson and junior midfielder Kristen Fink (Menasha, WI/St. Mary Central) then assisted on Landin's second score of the game less than three minutes into the second period. Stevenson recorded her third assist of the game at the 71:30 mark when sophomore midfielder Breanne Kuenzi (Las Vegas, NV/Bonanza) found the back of the net. Sophomore forward Tanya Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X) was also credited with an assist on Kuenzi's first goal of the season. Finally, with just over ten minutes remaining in the contest, junior defender Mei-Yun Gibson (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest) blasted home an unassisted goal to close out the scoring.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristyne Operzedek (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) needed just four saves to record the shutout in her collegiate debut. Lake Forest out-shot the Mustangs 23-5.

As she did just 20 hours earlier, Landin scored the Foresters' first two goals again on Saturday. Stevenson and Fink each recorded assists on the first score and senior Samantha England (Prince George, BC/Kelly Road Secondary), who missed the 2001 season with a knee injury and the 2002 campaign studying overseas, assisted on Landin's fourth goal of the weekend. Fink got on the scoreboard herself in the second half on an unassisted goal and junior midfielder Carinn Rasak (Santa Fe, NM/Santa Fe Preparatory) finished off the scoring with just seven minutes remaining off a pass from Landin.

Operzedek once again saved four shots to earn the shutout. The Foresters rattled off 25 shots while North Central attempted just eight.

Lake Forest's next game will be its home opener on Wednesday (September 10) against Dominican University and will begin at 4:30 p.m.
