2001 Preview: Proven Foresters Ready for Challenges of 2001 Season

LAKE FOREST, IL - After finishing amongst the Midwest Conference's top two teams in each of Head Coach Chris Conger's first two season, and earning the school's first-ever MWC title (1999), the Lake Forest Women's tennis program has established themselves as a consistent contender for the league crown.

The Foresters compiled a 10-3 record last year and won 80% (24-6) of their matches the past two seasons.  The formula for success has been a winning attitude combined with the team's tremendous depth.  "It has truly been a team effort--any member of our team is capable of winning matches."

Lake Forest won 81% (38-9) of their matches at No. 3 through No. 6 singles last season and 69% (18-8) of their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

This year's team returns seven of its top eight players, but, for the second straight season, the Foresters must replace their No. 1 singles player.  In 2001, the Foresters must find a replacement for Shannon Sobieski, a three-time team Most Valuable Player at the top of the lineup.

Conger's 2001 lineup should be his most experienced, as five of his seven returnees are either juniors or seniors.  "Our upperclass players have given us a great deal of leadership the past few years, which has been pivotal in our recent success.  So I will be counting on this group of juniors and seniors for not only wins, but to step into leadership roles within the team."
