2003 Preview: Out to Reclaim the Title

Brittany Richardson looks to repeat
last year's performance.
LAKE FOREST, IL - After a three-year hiatus from the top spot in the Midwest Conference, Forester head coach Chris Conger believes his team can reclaim the title in 2003, and with good reason. The 2002 team went 12-5 and outscored its opponents 121-51. The accomplishments of last year’s squad combined with the fact that many key members are back in 2003 has Conger anticipating even more success in the future. “For the first time since I became a part of this program,” explains Conger, “we will not have to replace our number one singles player because of graduation.”

Not only will Courtney Livingston return after filling the top spot in the lineup as a freshman in 2002 but classmate Brittany Richardson will be back as well after claiming the individual conference championship at number two singles. Richardson completed the 2002 season with a 15-3 overall record, including an 11-2 mark at number two.

Maren Haag and Abbey Jennings are also returning for their junior and senior seasons, respectively. Haag has a career record of 26-7 in singles and doubles combined. Jennings, during her first year with the Foresters, compiled an 11-1 overall singles record, including a perfect 8-0 mark at number six, where she captured a conference championship.

Since Conger took over the program in 1999, Lake Forest has lost just one match in MWC South Division play and accumulated an overall record of 47-14. The Foresters have earned the division’s top seed in the MWC Tourney each of his four seasons, but he is setting his sites a little higher in 2003. “We graduated tremendous players and teammates in Robyn Slater, Angie Kral, and Jackie Pieczkiewicz, but I’m very excited about all the players we have coming back,” begins Conger. “If we are able to add few talented newcomers to replace the three seniors, the sky is the limit.”
