Lake Forest Places Third at MWC Tourney, Wapotish Wins Title at #5 Singles
Jackson and Richardson set school records

Kendal Wapotish won the #5 singles conference title.
MADISON, WI - The Forester women’s tennis team finished third in the Midwest Conference Team Championship Tournament on Friday (October 14) in Rockford, Illinois. Lake Forest fell 5-1 to St. Norbert College in the semifinals before defeating Lawrence University 5-0 in the third-place match. Grinnell College repeated as champions by knocking off both Lawrence and St. Norbert. The Foresters finished the season with a 10-5 record and also tallied the second-highest point total in the MWC doubles and singles tournaments on Saturday and Sunday (October 15-16).

Senior Jill Chudacoff (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) and junior Kendal Wapotish (McHenry, IL/McHenry) earned the team’s point against St. Norbert with a 6-4, 6-0 win at number three doubles.

The Foresters claimed all doubles matches against Lawrence. Sophomore Alli Berry (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) and junior Anastasia Rudkovskaya (Buffalo Grove, IL/Buffalo Grove) prevailed 8-5 at number one and the number two team of senior Brittany Richardson (Little Rock, AR/Central) and sophomore Jaime Jackson (Milwaukee, WI/Divine Savior-Holy Angels) recorded an 8-6 triumph. Chudacoff and Wapotish won their second match of the day 8-2 at number three.

Berry and Wapotish finished off the contest with victories at numbers one and five singles. Berry won 8-3 and Wapotish triumphed 8-2.

All three doubles teams reached the semifinals on Saturday. Berry and Rudkovskaya were eliminated in that round by St. Norbert’s top two players in three sets. Richardson and Jackson, despite not being among the top four seeds at number two doubles, won three times before falling in the championship match. A three-set loss in the finals at number three was the first loss in five matches on the weekend for Chudacoff and Wapotish.

The Foresters recorded one championship, a pair of runner-up finishes, and three more semifinal appearances in Sunday’s singles tournaments. Wapotish was seeded fourth at number five but rattled off three consecutive wins, including a three-set triumph in the championship, to claim the title. Chudacoff was not seeded among the top four at the third spot in the lineup but also won three straight before falling in the final. Jackson prevailed in the quarterfinals and semifinals at number six to extend her singles winning streak to a school record 12 matches. She battled to a three-set loss in the title match. Berry was the third seed at number one and advanced to the semifinals before falling. Unseeded Richardson also reached the semifinals at number two but lost to the eventual runner-up in three sets. A 9-7 third-set tiebreak loss in the semifinals narrowly prevented Rudkovskaya from making it to the championship at number four.

Richardson’s five victories on the weekend in singles and doubles combined give her a school record 95 (against 48 losses) in her career. She set the mark for career doubles wins earlier this season and finished with 52. Her 43 career singles triumphs rank third. She and Chudacoff are the squad’s only seniors.
