Foresters Clinch South Division Title With Pair of Wins
Defending champs earn top seed for Conference Tournament

GALESBURG, IL - The Lake Forest College women's tennis team picked up wins over Grinnell College, 6-3, and Knox College, 5-4, on Saturday (September 30th) to clinch the team's second consecutive Midwest Conference South Division championship. Both matches were played on Knox's campus.

With the two wins, Lake Forest (8-2, 3-0) earned a top seed and will play the North Division's number two seed at the MWC team championships on Friday, October 13th in Rockford, IL. The Foresters won last year's team championship from the same position.

Lake Forest used a strong showing from the lower portion of their line-up to secure the 6-3 win over Grinnell in their first match of the day. Angie Kral (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) at No. 3, Sarah Roberts (Plainfield, IL/Lyons Township) at No. 4, Jamie Irons (Neenah, WI/Neenah) at No. 5, and Jackie Pieczkiewicz (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake Community) at No. 6 all won in singles action, while Irons and Shannon Sobieski (Fox Point, WI/Nicolet) at No. 2 and Roberts and Laura Lauterbach (Lake Zurich, IL/Zake Zurich) at N. 3 won in doubles play.

Against Knox, Lake Forest fell behind 2-1 after the doubles matches, but claimed wins in four of the six singles matches to account for the 5-4 team victory. Roberts, Irons, and Pieczkiewicz each won their second match of the day in straight sets, with Irons and Pieczkiewicz winning 6-0, 6-0.

Sobieski, at No. 1 singles, took a more dramatic route for her match. After winning the first set 6-4, Sobieski dropped the second set 1-6, setting up a third set tie-breaker to determine the match and the South Division's top seed. Sobieski's come-from-behind 8-6 win in the tie-breaker gave LF their eighth win of the season and the South Division crown.

Lake Forest will return to action this Monday (October 2nd) for a non-conference match with Benedictine University in Lisle, IL.
