The senior seminar is designed to be a capstone course, one class that allows you to synthesize all you have learned throughout your study of politics. I have chosen a topic to allow us to visit many areas of politics: political theory, American political institutions, elections, law and constitutionalism, comparative politics. It also allows you the opportunity to select, for intense study, any area of special interest to you. For these reason we will focus on the subtopic of affirmative action.

Course readings include:

Stephen L. Carter, Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby
Beckwith and Jones, Affirmative Action: Social Justice or Reverse Discrimination?
Christopher Edley, Not All Black and White
Lyndon B. Johnson, To Fulfill These Rights
Bakke v. California
Grutter v. Bollinger

Gratz v. Bollinger
