COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will examine contemporary French cultural perceptions through a variety of cinematic examples taken from French films. Major French directors and their cinematic portrayals of the French will be studied, as well as documentaries and the authenticity of the portrait they produce of French society.

Although the primary focus is cultural analysis, thematic discussion will be coupled with an introduction to vocabulary used in cinema and historical discussion of the evolution of French film. In addition, the topic of "remaking culture" through film will be addressed in the context of cross-cultural comparisons between the U.S. and France.
