Introduction

Throughout the unit, you have become an expert on the novel through journal responses, in-class activities, discussions, etc. You have also watched me model how to discern literary criticism in class and you will apply the strategies I demonstrated to your own independent analysis of a section of a literary criticism. Thus, you will enter into the role of a literary critic analyzing an essay of a colleague. You are a going to read, summarize, and interpret part of a professional literary criticism of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Later, you will synthesize the knowledge you gained from the article as a whole. Through this analysis you will realize that scholars approach Shelley’s novel from very different perspectives in that the essay you will be reading combines a variety of literary interpretations of the novel. Your task as a literary critic is to read, summarize, and critique the section of the essay assigned to you. You will be sharing your summary and critique with a group of three other students in an online posting as well as responding to your peer’s postings. Then, you will write a reflection on how the reading of the literary criticism has changed your interpretation of the novel.

The Task

Independent Work:

Read, summarize, and critique the section of the essay assigned to you.

Your summary should include the following:

·        Main points touched on in the section

·        Brief evidence used by critic to support main arguments

·        Your critique of the points touched on in the essay

Collaborative Work:

Post your summary and critique on the message board and respond to the postings of the other three members of your group.

Independent Synthesis of Information:

Synthesize the knowledge you gained from the article as a whole by writing a one-page reflection.

The Process

Independent Work – 15 minutes

1.     Determine which section of the article you are reading. Please read directions more than once and very carefully so you do not read the wrong section.

SECTION I OF ARTICLE: STUDENTS A, E, I, M, Q, U

First five paragraphs of essay until section II

SECTION II OF ARTICLE: STUDNETS B, F, J, N, R, V

First five paragraphs of section II beginning on page 190

SECTION III OF ARTICLE: STUDENTS C, G, K, O, S, W

Frankenstein: Myths of Scientific and Medical Knowledge and Stories of Human Relations by Steven Marcus

3.     Open the word document and answer the two questions in as much detail as you can in the time allowed.

4.     Use the dictionary to define unfamiliar words encountered in the text.

5.     When you are finished, copy and paste your writing from the word document on the message board for our class. The purpose of this is for students to be able to access your writing and respond to it.

Collaborative Work – 15 minutes

1.     If other students are still working, please show respect by quietly reading postings of other students and responding to them. Below are criteria for responding to other’s entries:

You must respond to each of the three members in your group. Each entry must be more than 200 words (half a page to a page).

Your groups:

Group 1: A, B, C, D

Group 2: E, F, G, H

Group 3: I, J, K, L

Group 4: M, N, O, P

Group 5: Q, R, S, T

Group 6: U, V, W, X

Respond to a single comment or a whole entry in the same manner you critiqued your own section of the article. The following are just examples:

·        The point about ______ surprised/intrigued/challenged, etc. me because…

·           I agree/disagree with ________________ because…

You are also encouraged to respond to the entries of other students outside your group.

Independent Synthesis of Information – 15 minutes

Synthesize the knowledge you gained from the article as a whole by writing a reflection of 400 words or more. Post this on the message board as well.

·        Topic: how reading and responding to the article changed your interpretation of the novel

Please finish this assignment for homework. I will check for its completion on the message board on Sunday at 6 PM. This gives you a total of three days.

Conclusion

This WebQuest has allowed you to read, summarize, analyze, as well as respond to professional literary criticism. You also synthesized the knowledge gained from the article and compared it to how reading the literary criticism changed your interpretation of the novel. The skills you applied to discerning the essay will be valuable in your future. More importantly, you have engaged in dialogue with yourself by writing in response to the text. Then, you engaged in dialogue with your peers who took apart other sections of the essay. Then, you went back and reflected on how reading the literary criticism and engaging in dialogue with your peers altered your interpretation of the novel. This is good practice to keep in mind for the future because your peers, like literary critics, will have different interpretations. Throughout the WebQuest you have also engaged with both your reasoning and your emotions. I expect you to use both your reasoning and your personal responses not just when you are reading a literary criticism. In other words, the skills you practiced in this assignment will go a long way to help you in life.
