Another Doubleheader Split for Lake Forest at Carthage
Closson’s hitting streak ends at 13 games

Ashley Closson had at least one hit in 13 consecutive games.
KENOSHA, WI - The Forester softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Carthage College on Thursday (April 1). Lake Forest snapped the Lady Reds’ 10-game winning streak with a 3-2 triumph in the opener before the home team blanked the Foresters 3-0 in game two. Lake Forest is now 8-7 on the season and Carthage is 15-3.

The Lady Reds scored game one’s first run in the bottom of the third inning. The Foresters tied the score in the fourth on a one-out double by junior Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) and an RBI-single by sophomore Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro). Feeney finished with two of the team’s five base hits in the game.

After Carthage regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, Lake Forest plated two in the top of the fifth when a single by Feeney and error by the left fielder scored juniors Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) and Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago).

Senior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) scattered seven Carthage base hits to raise her record on the year to 4-2. She also struck out five and walked a pair while allowing just one earned run.

Closson took the hard-luck loss for the Foresters in game two. All three Carthage runs were unearned and scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. Closson allowed just four base hits and as many walks while striking out six. She also went hitless herself for the first time this season, snapping a 13-game hitting streak, which tied the fifth-longest in school history.

Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference play with a doubleheader at home against Grinnell College on Saturday (April 3). The Foresters and Pioneers split two games at Grinnell last season.
