April 18, 2009 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Lake Forest Wins Two of Three on Day One of Midwest Conference Classic
The Foresters jumped out the the early lead against Lawrence with three runs n the bottom of the first inning. Junior Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) reached on a two-out error and classmates Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) followed with singles. Rainey scored on Andresen's base hit and both runners advanced a base on the throw to the plate. Junior Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) then doubled them in. Lawrence pulled to within one with two runs in the top of the third inning. The Vikings then tied the score with one in the sixth. Lake Forest regained the lead on a run-scoring single by junior Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) in the bottom of the sixth. After Lawrence took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, Rainey started another rally with a leadoff double in the bottom of the frame. Norton greeted a new pitcher with an RBI double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Andresen. Neill then singled her in with the winning run. Andresen pitched all seven innings to earn the victory. Norton had three base hits in the game, including the 100th of her career. Sophomore Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) threw all five innings against St. Norbert for her first shutout of the season and second in her career. She surrendered just four base hits and struck out five while walking one in the contest. Andresen doubled in a run in the top of the first inning and senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) repeated that feat in the second. Rainey then scored on another base hit by Andresen in the third to make the score 3-0. The Foresters put the game our of reach with six runs in the top of the fourth. The first four scored on a grand slam by Rainey, her second home run of the season. Norton, Andresen, and Neill followed with base hits and the other two runs scored when the Green Knight outfielder misplayed Neill's single. Michal and Andresen each had three hits in the game while Rainey and Norton added two apiece. The game between Lake Forest and Ripon was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Norton belted her third home run of the season. The Red Hawks, however, plated one in the bottom of the inning to tie score. Neither team scored again until a runner was placed on second base to begin both halves of the ninth inning. Freshman Stephanie Sanocki (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) was that runner for the Foresters and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo./Rifle) and scored on a single by freshman Leslie Harshey (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Ripon also bunted the runner to third in the bottom of the ninth and she scored on a sacrifice fly. Michal started the 10th on second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ashley Szyszka (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), and scored on a base hit by Rainey. The Red Hawks also repeated their ninth inning process of scoring a run and then, with two outs, added three walks and a single for the victory. Galasek pitched the entire game again, allowing just five hits and two earned runs in 9-2/3 innings. She struck out three and did not issue a walk until the 10th inning. Andresen was 3-for-4 and Rainey and Norton were each 2-for-5 in the contest. Lake Forest will face Beloit College at 10:00 Sunday morning (April 19) and Carroll University at 2:00 p.m. Lake Forest - Lawrence Box Score
