JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Lake Forest College softball team concluded play at the 2009 Midwest Classic on Sunday (April 19) with a 6-3 victory over Beloit College and a 5-3 triumph in a five-inning rain-shortened game against Carroll University. The Foresters are now 11-15 overall this season and 6-3 in league play.

After a scoreless first inning against Beloit, Lake Forest took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a base hit by classmate Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South). Both runners then scored on fellow junior Shelby Neill's (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) first home run of the season.

The Foresters added two runs in the third and many of the same players were involved. Junior Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) hit a two-out double and scored on a base hit by Norton. Andresen walked and Neill earned her fourth RBI of the contest by singling in Norton.

Senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) scored Lake Forest's sixth and final run of the game on a Rainey double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Andresen pitched the first five innings of the game to earn the victory and even her record on the season at 5-5. She held the Buccaneers scoreless until allowing a pair of runs in the fifth. Beloit also scored once in the seventh.

Neill, Rainey, and freshman Ashley Szyszka (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) each had two hits in the game and Michal's sixth-inning single was the 100th base hit of her career.

After scoring first in each of their first four games of the weekend, the Foresters surrendered three run in the bottom of the first inning to Carroll. The score was still 3-0 after the third inning, when the teams were forced to wait out a long rain delay. Before play resumed, the coaches agreed to play just five innings.

Norton and Andresen singled with one out in the fourth inning and Norton scored Lake Forest's first run of the game on a base hit by freshman Danielle Gore (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey).

Trailing 3-1 going into the fifth and final inning, the Foresters got a leadoff single from junior Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) to start the frame. Michal reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an infield single by Szyszka. Rainey doubled in Michal and Szyszka scored on a groundout by Norton. Andresen then gave Lake Forest the lead with a two-run homer run, her team-high fourth round-tripper of the season.

In addition to scoring the tying run in the fifth, Szyszka also pitched in relief and blanked the Lady Pioneers for the final four innings to earn her first career victory. She allowed four base hits and did not allow a walk.

The Foresters will play their final home games of the season against the University of Chicago on Tuesday (April 21), beginning at 3:00 p.m.
