LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester softball team began Midwest Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with visiting Monmouth College on Saturday (April 4). Lake Forest fell 9-2 in the opener before winning game two 10-6. The team is now 5-10 overall this season. The Fighting Scots are 8-7.

Monmouth jumped out to an early lead in game one with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. The Scots added one in the second and two more in the fourth.

Lake Forest finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Juniors Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) singled to lead off the frame and then scored with two outs on a Monmouth error.

The visitors tacked on one more run in the sixth inning and put the game out of reach with three in the seventh.

The Foresters were the visitors in game two and plated one in the top of the first inning. Senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) and freshman Ashley Szyszka (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) started the frame with infield hits and Michal eventually scored on a groundout by Norton. Monmouth tied the game with one in the bottom of the inning.

Lake Forest regained the lead in the third. Michal drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, reached third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Norton. The Scots, however, scored three times in their half of the inning to take a 4-2 advantage.

Junior Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) led off the fourth inning with her first career home run. Junior Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) then singled and freshman Danielle Gore (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) gave the Foresters a 5-4 lead on the first round-tripper of her collegiate career.

A Rainey single and three walks, including one to Neill with the bases loaded, put the home team ahead 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Then, with two outs and the bases still full, sophomore Kaylee Gendrich (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) became the third Forester in the game to clear the fence with her first career home run.

Sophomore Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) pitched four innings in relief to earn the victory. Whe surrendered a pair of runs on just one base hit.

Rainey finished the day with four base hits - two in each game. Michal and Norton had one hit in each contest.

The Foresters' doubleheader against Illinois College on Sunday (April 5) has already been re-scheduled to Monday, April 13, due to weather. Lake Forest's next two games will be at North Central College on Thursday (April 9) and the Foresters will host Robert Morris College the following afternoon. Both non-conference doubleheaders will begin at 3:00 p.m.
