NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Lake Forest College softball team split a doubleheader at North Central College on Thursday (April 9). The Foresters fell 11-1 in five innings in the opener and prevailed 11-7 in eight innings in game two. Lake Forest now owns a 6-11 record on the season and the Cardinals are 11-7.

The Foresters actually scored first in the opener when junior Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) doubled in freshman Ashley Szyszka (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) in the first inning.

North Central responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame and added two in the second and six in the fourth.

Lake Forest also jumped out to the early lead in game two. Szyszka singled with one out in the first inning and scored on junior Tracy Rainey's (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) first home run of the season. Norton then singled, advanced to second on an error, and scored on a double by sophomore Kaylee Gendrich (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North).

The visitors extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth on back-to-back singles singles by Rainey, Norton, and junior Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South).

Andresen, who hit her first career home run on Saturday, belted another in the fifth to make the score 5-0.

The Cardinals battled back, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and grabbing the lead with four in the sixth.

The top of the Lake Forest lineup came through again in the seventh. Senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) and Rainey drew walks and Norton singled to load the bases with one out. Andresen singled in Michal but a fileder's choice forced out Rainey at the plate. The Foresters were down to their last out when Gendrich forced extra innings on an RBI single up the middle.

Michal singled and advanced to second on an error with one out in the eighth. A sacrifice bunt sent her to third and an error on a ball hit by Rainey brought her in with the lead run. Norton then singled and Andresen belted her second homer of the game to make the score 11-7.

Norton's base hit was her fourth of the contest, matching the career-high she set at North Central two years earlier. It was also the fourth hit of the game for Andresen, whose previous career-high in that category had been two. The first five batters in the Forester lineup - Michal, Szyszka, Rainey, Norton, and Andresen - had 15 of the team's season-high 17 base hits, scored 11 runs, and drove in nine.

Sophomore Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) pitched all eight innings for the Foresters to earn the victory, evening her record on the season at 4-4.

Lake Forest will play another non-conference doubleheader against Robert Morris College at home Friday afternoon (April 10) at 3:00.
