RIPON, Wis. - The Lake Forest College softball team's 2009 season came to an end at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament over the weekend (May 1-2). The Foresters began the double-elimination event with an 8-1 loss to St. Norbert College Friday morning but rebounded to eliminate Monmouth College 17-8 in six innings that afternoon. Another loss (6-5) to St. Norbert Saturday morning ended Lake Forest's season with a 17-18 overall record. The Green Knights also went on to defeat Ripon College 8-6 and 5-4 to claim the title.

The tournament's first contest was scoreless until St. Norbert broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Knights added one in the six and put the game out of reach with four in the seventh. The Foresters got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh when junior Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) led off with a double, her school record-setting 16th of the year, and scored on a base hit buy classmate Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian).

Junior pitcher Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) surrendered thre three runs in the fifth but allowed just four hits and a walk in four-and-two-thirds innings of work.

Lake Forest also fell behind in Friday afternoon's elimination game when Monmouth plated one in the bottom of the first inning.

The Foresters, however, responded with nine runs in the top of the second. Junior Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) led off with a single and later scored on an error. With a pair of runners on base and the score tied at one, freshman Danielle Gore (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) belted her third home of the season. Freshman Leslie Harshey (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and senior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) had singles, with Michal's driving in two more runs. Rainey followed the first out of the inning with a two-run homer, her fifth of the season, and Neill singled in the final run of the frame. Monmouth scored three times in the bottom of the second inning, cutting Lake Forest's lead to 9-4.

The Foresters added three runs in the top of the third. Harshey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a single by junior Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton), and scored on a base hit by Rainey. Pinsonneault and Rainey then came home on an outfield error.

The Fighting Scots scored two more runs in both the third and fourth and trailed by just four runs (12-8) after four innings.

Lake Forest added a run in the fifth on back-to-back-to-back singles by freshman Ashley Szyszka (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), Rainey, and Norton. The Foresters also plated four in the sixth. Singles by Harshey and Michal put runners on first and third with two outs. Szyszka singled in the first run of the inning, two scored on a Rainey double, and Norton singled in the fourth tally of the frame.

Szyska, who entered the game as a pitcher in the third, allowed four runs in as many innings but struck out a season-high five batters and earned the victory.

Rainey was 4-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored and five driven in. Norton had three base hits in the contest and Michal, Gore, Harshey, and Szyszka added two apiece.

The Foresters grabbed the early lead in Saturday morning's game against St. Norbert. Michal led off the contest with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a base hit by Rainey.

The visitors in the game also scored three times in the top of the third inning. As she did in the first, Michal started the rally with a leadoff single, went to second on a groundout, and scored on a hit - this time a double - by Rainey. Norton then singled in Rainey and later scored on a groundout by Neill. The Green Knights finally scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third.

Lake Forest got that run back in the top of the fourth. Base hits by Pinsonneault and Michal singled and a Rainey walk loaded the bases with one out. Norton then singled in Michal but Szyszka, who had reahed on a fielder's choice, was thrown out at the plate.

Trailing 5-1, St. Norbert scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning and once more in the sixth. The Green Knights than plated two in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

Michal, Rainey, and Norton each had three base hits in the contest and combined for a .600 (21-for-25) batting average with 12 runs scored and 13 RBI on the weekend.

Rainey finished as the team's leader with a .482 batting average, the third-highest mark in program history. Her 18 doubles are a new school record and she tied the mark for base hits with 54. Her 87 total bases 40 runs batted in each rank second in team history and her .777 slugging percentage is third. She led the squad with 31 runs scored and tied Neill with a team-high five home runs. In addition, she had at least one hit in each of the last 15 games of the season to match the third-longest hitting streak in program history.

Szyszka's 11 sacrifice bunts are tied for fourth in team history. Michal drew 18 walks on the year, matching the program's second-highest total, and led the Foresters with five stolen bases. She is the only player the team will lose to graduation next weekend.

Andresen and sophomore Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) led the pitchers with seven victories apiece. Galasek also recorded team-highs in innings pitcher (87.1) and strikeouts (44).
