The Foresters had two players reach double figures in both points and rebounds in the same game for the first time this season. Sophomore center Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) matched one career-high with 19 points and set others with 15 rebounds and five assists. She shot 7-for-9 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line in her fifth double-double in the last 10 games. Senior guard Devon Liebl (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Pius XI) had 11 points and as many boards for her third double-double of the year and seventh of her career.
Three others scored in double figures for the home team, giving Lake Forest five players with at least 10 points in a game for the first time since the opening weekend of the 2003-04 season. Junior guard Beth Lucas (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey) shot 6-for-9 from the field and finished with 13 points. Junior forward Andrea Durante (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), the team’s leading scorer on the year, had 11 points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard Sarah Holsen (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) scored 10. Junior guard Lizzy Bauer (Madison, WI/Madison West) matched Baich’s five assists and added a game-high four steals.
Lake Forest shot 43.7% from the floor in the game, 3-for-15 from three-point range, and 10-for-18 from the free throw line. Grinnell was held to 34.5% shooting from the field, knocked down 11 of 33 three-pointers, and shot 9-for-15 from the foul line. The Foresters out-rebounded their guests 54-31 and pulled down 14 in a row late in the first half.
The game was tied at 2, 6, 14, and 18 before a 10-0 Lake Forest run gave the home team a double-digit lead. After the Pioneers scored the game’s next seven points to trim the margin to three, the Foresters scored the first half’s final five points to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room at intermission.
Grinnell outscored Lake Forest 10-2 in the first 2:15 of the second half to tie the score at 35. A 9-2 Forester run put the home team ahead to stay and a 14-0 Lake Forest run beginning with just over nine minutes to play put the game out of reach.
