Eight Foresters Compete at NCAA Midwest Regional Championship
Seniors Evans, Zemaitis and Kavuri run well in final meet

Seniors Joe Zemaitis (top) and Charles Evans (botom) end their careers with 14 of the top 25 times in the cross country program's 7-year history.
ROCK ISLAND, IL - Lake Forest College head cross country coach Tina McDonie took three women and five men to the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship Meet on Saturday (November 10th). Three of them came home with their best times of the year and four others were within 30 seconds of their top times of the 2001 season.

UW-La Crosse won the women's team title with 68 points, 15 more than second-place UW-Oshkosh. Washington University was third (140) and UW-Stevens Point finished fourth (173). The top four teams in the women's race advanced to the NCAA National Championship Meet.

UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh were the top two teams in the men's race as well, with 44 and 58 points, respectively. North Central College finished third (94), UW-Stevens Point took home fourth place (126) and UW-Platteville placed fifth (222). All five teams advance to nationals.

Sophomore Lee Winklepleck (Shaker Heights, OH/Hathaway Brown) was the top female Forester and completed the 5-kilometer course in 21:30. Junior Molly Sutherland (St. Paul, MN/Visitation) ran her fastest race of the year, finishing in 22:33.

Seniors Charles Evans (Asheville, NC/Carolina Day School), Joe Zemaitis (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) and Naresh Kavuri (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) all ran well in the final race of their careers. Evans's 8-kilometer time of 27:40 made him the top finisher on the team in every race this season. He ends his career with four of the top five times in the program's seven-year history and eight ranking in the top 25. Zemaitis's 28:25 was his best of the season and his four injury-riddled years still produced six of the school's top 25 times. Kavuri's 31:11 is the second-best time of his season and career.

Junior Eric Crawley (Braintree, MA/Thayer) finished the race in 28:01, just six seconds slower than his career-best and freshman Logan Dick (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) finished in 29:56, the first time he's ever been under 30 minutes.

While four runners on the men's team will receive their diplomas in May, the women's squad loses just one runner to graduation. Head coach Tina McDonie will be looking for new runners on both sides to make a difference in 2002.
