Derek Meiring Breaks School Record in Forester Invitational
Sixteen Foresters run season-bests
  

Derek Meiring's 27:02 is the fastest time in school history.
LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College played host to the 4th Annual Forester Invitational Saturday (October 19) at the Half Day Forest Preserve in Vernon Hills, Illinois. There were 17 teams in both the women's 5-kilometer and men's 8-kilometer races. Lake Forest finished sixth in each of them.

Northwestern University won the women's team title with just 27 points. Bethel College placed second with 92 and Monmouth College finishing third with 111. Elgin Community College (126) and Trinity Christian College (155) rounded out the top five. Catie LaBracke of Northwestern was the indivual winner with a time of 19:16.

The top female runner for the Foresters was senior Erin Motzer (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville), with a career-best time of 20:58. Freshman Elisabeth Lewis (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Black Forest Academy) finished three places behind Motzer with a season-best 21:09. Junior Lee Winklepleck (Shaker Heights, OH/Hathaway Brown) had a time of 21:50 and was the third Forester to cross the line. Freshman Genia Lindsey (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia) and sophomore Olga Mikhaylov (Chicago, IL/Stevenson) also ran season-bests with times of 22:43 and 23:03, respectively, and completed Lake Forest's top five.

In the men's race, Bethel edged out Monmouth by just four points (69-73) for the team title. Concordia University (IL) was third with 109, Knox College fourth with 116, and the College of DuPage fifth with 123. Robert Morris College's Hillary Rono was the individual champion with a time of 25:48.

Freshman Derek Meiring (Carleton, MI/Airport Senior) completed the course in 27:02, the fastest 8K time in Lake Forest College history, good for eighth place overall. Senior Eric Crawley (Braintree, MA/Thayer) was just four places and 16 seconds back with the program's fifth-best time (27:18). Sophomore Logan Dick (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic) finished in 28:42, senior Rob Bahde (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield) in 29:19, and sophomore Beau Llewellyn (Oro Station, ON/Eastview Secondary School) in 29:33. All eight Forester men ran season-best times and it marked the first time in school history that five male runners finished under 30 minutes on the same day.

Lake Forest will have two weeks to savor this performance and prepare for the 2002 Midwest Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, November 2. St. Norbert College will host the event at Colburn Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The women's 5K will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the men's 8K will follow.
