FORESTER WOMEN FINISH 5TH AT 22-TEAM CARTHAGE INVITE
The Lake Forest cross country teams continued their 1999 trends on Saturday at the Carthage Invitational held at the UW-Parkside course - the women again had an impressive showing while the men were limited due to injuries.
The Lake Forest women finished fifth out of 18 complete teams and three Forester women, running on the toughest course they will see all season, recorded their season-best five-kilometer time -- Michelle Murillo (Des Plaines, IL), Jillian Hibler (Salt Lake City, UT), and Molly Sutherland (St. Paul, MN) ran 21:22, 21:49, and 23:28, respectively. Junior Sarah Simpson (Colorado Springs, CO) was the top Forester runner with an award-winning time of 21:09, good for 20th place (out of 147 total runners). "We ran really well on a tough course, especially our two captains, Michelle and Sarah," commented Head Coach Mike Wajerski. "We're looking forward to going back to this course in three weeks and improving on what we just did." The Foresters will compete in the UW-Parkside Invitational on Saturday, October 16th.
Wajerski summed up his men's team with a simple phrase: "We need to get healthy." The Foresters fielded an incomplete team at the meet, with only a pair of freshmen, Eric Crawley (Braintree, MA) and Sean Smith (Evergreen, CO), running. "Eric and Sean ran good races," according to Wajerski. "It's always easier running for a team score, but they did a nice job of toughing it out on a difficult course running as individuals."
Both teams will compete at the Beloit English-Style Race in Beloit, WI this Saturday, October 2nd.
