LAKE FOREST DEFEATS CARROLL IN SEASON FINALE
Lake Forest's 21-14 win over Carroll on Saturday (Nov. 13) was a big win in more ways than one. The win gave the Foresters a 5-5 record and their first non-losing season since 1986. It also gave Lake Forest a 4-5 mark in the Midwest Conference and a tie for fifth place in the league, the second consecutive year the Foresters have finished in the conference's upper division. Equally as important, Lake Forest's 24 seniors, the first recruiting class for Head Coach Randy Moore, were sent out on a winning note. When Moore took over the Forester football program, his first team had just 36 members and had won 9 games in the previous 5 years.
In a game that featured 25 punts, the Foresters used a quick-strike offense and a stingy defense to get their fifth win of the 1999 season. Lake Forest's scoring drives consisted of one play, two plays, and two plays; and 6 seconds, 38 seconds, and 33 seconds, respectively. The Forester defense pitched a shutout through the first three quarters and then made a big stand in the game's last minute to hold on for the victory.
Lake Forest opened the scoring in the second quarter after a David Smith (Barrington, IL/Barrington H.S.) interception, his team-high fifth of the year, was returned to the Carroll 10-yard line. Freshman Blake Formsma (Battle Creek, MI/Philip H.S.) rumbled 10 yards for the touchdown on the next play. After the Lake Forest defense forced a Carroll punt from their own five-yard line, the Forester offense got the ball on the Carroll 30-yard line. Tyrome Bembry (Hamilton, OH/Culver Academy) took advantage of the shortened field as he rumbled 28 yards on the Foresters' second play of the drive to give the Foresters a 14-0 lead with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. On Carroll's ensuing possession, Andy O'Hara (South Bend, IN/Riley H.S.) picked off an Eric Block pass and returned it 19 yards into Carroll territory. Two plays later, Jamie Linton (Bridgeview, IL/Moraine Valley C.C.) pulled in a 41-yard bomb from quarterback Tom Dranger (Sauk Village, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.) to put Lake Forest up 21-0 early in the fourth quarter.
After scoring on back-to-back long touchdown drives (71 and 59 yards) in the fourth quarter, Carroll marched the ball down the field again with less than two minutes to play in the contest, but was turned away six times with a goal-to-go situation, including four times inside the three-yard line. Carroll's first opportunity came after a Lake Forest pass interference call took them to the Forester six-yard line with 1:52 remaining. Block then threw two consecutive incompletions, but the Foresters were once again called for pass interference and Carroll got a first-and-goal from the two-yard line. Bernie Perconti (Louisville, KY/Kentucky Country Day H.S.) stepped up to make back-to-back solo tackles on first and second downs and actually pushed Carroll back to the three-yard line. The Foresters forced another incompletion and Marcus Collins (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside H.S.) and Zach Sharkey (Danville, IL/Danville H.S.) combined for a one-yard tackle for loss on fourth down to seal the victory for Lake Forest. Dranger then took a knee with 27 seconds remaining to run out the clock on the Pioneers.
O'Hara finished the afternoon with 12 tackles, including one for loss, and his interception. He also had a pass break-up. Perconti had 8 tackles, including 6 solos and 2 for losses, while Jay Biondo (Barrington, IL/Barrington) had 4 tackles for losses and 7 total tackles. Lake Forest had 9 players with 5 or more tackles on the afternoon.
Offensively, Bembry rushed 19 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Formsma had 16 rushes for 56 yards. But the Foresters biggest weapon may have been the foot of punter Pat Dunne (Chicago, IL/Marist H.S.), who had 12 punts for 578 yards (48.2 yards per punt). His 12 punts tied a school record and he broke the punting yards in a game mark by 100 yards. His game total increased his season total to 2,134 yards, also a new school record.
