ELEVEN FORESTERS NAMED ALL-MIDWEST CONFERENCE
Led by four First Team selections, 11 total Lake Forest football players earned a spot on the 1999 All-Midwest Conference teams. Ten of the Lake Forest All-Conference picks are seniors. First Team selections included senior offensive lineman Russ Hennings (Laguna Niguel, CA/St. Margaret's High School), senior defensive lineman Jay Biondo (Barrington, IL/Barrington H.S.), senior linebacker Bernie Perconti (Louisville, KY/Kentucky Country Day H.S.), and sophomore punter Pat Dunne (Chicago, IL/Marist H.S.).
Hennings led an offensive line that propelled the Foresters to 240.1 rushing yards per game, the 17th highest average in the nation. The team's 251 rushing yards per MWC game was the second highest total in the conference. Fellow offensive lineman Bob Hansen (Chicago, IL/St. Rita H.S.) was named to the All-MWC Honorable Mention team.
Biondo, from his nose tackle position, recorded 34 total tackles (18 solo, 16 assists), including 14 for losses totaling 51 yards. He also had 3.5 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, and 2 pass break-ups.
Perconti, also a First Team All-Conference pick last year, led the team with 102 tackles (54 solo and 48 assists), 19 tackles for losses, and 7.0 sacks. He also had an interception. His tackles total was the tenth-highest single season total in school history. On the conference level, Perconti finished tied for third in the league with 0.78 sacks per game (7.0 sacks in 9 games) and tied for fifth with 92 tackles in league play. Of the top 15 tacklers in the MWC, Perconti was one of just three to have more solo tackles than assists.
Dunne, a First Team punter, was also a Second Team kicker. He set or tied 7 school records during the season. Dunne set single season marks with 2,134 yards punting and 31 points after touchdowns and broke a single game record with 578 punting yards (vs. Carroll on November 13th) and 8 PATs (vs. Lawrence on October 16th). He tied school records with 6 field goals made for the year, 12 punts in a game (also vs. Carroll), and 3 field goals in a game (vs. Ripon on October 9th). He also had the fourth-highest field goal percentage for a season (60%) and the third-highest season punting average (39.5 yards per punt) in school history. His punting average was also the 19th-highest total in NCAA Division III this season. At the conference level, Dunne led the league in punting average (40.1 yards per punt) and was fourth in individual kick scoring (5.0 points per game).
Joining Dunne on the Second Team was senior running back Tyrome Bembry (Hamilton, OH/Culver Academy) and senior tight end John Litscher (Lake Mills, WI/Lake Mills H.S.). Bembry was a Second Team selection last year while Litscher was an Honorable Mention pick in 1998.
Bembry led the Foresters with 757 yards rushing, 8 touchdowns, and 167 carries. He rushed for 4.0 yards per carry. Bembry also had 5 receptions for 25 yards. He was fifth in the league with 79.6 rushing yards per MWC game.
Litscher had 14 catches for 229 yards (16.4 yards/reception) and 3 touchdown grabs. His receiving touchdowns total led the team while his reception and receiving yards totals were both second-best on the team.
Five Forester seniors - quarterback Tom Dranger (Sauk Village, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.), Hansen, defensive lineman Dustin Cassady (Morton, IL/Morton H.S.), linebacker Andy O'Hara (South Bend, IN/Riley H.S.), and defensive back David Smith (Barrington, IL/Barrington H.S.) - were named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Dranger started 9 of the Foresters' 10 games at quarterback. He passed for 1,062 yards and rushed for another 328 yards. He completed 43.9% (61/139) of his passes. Dranger threw for 6 touchdowns and rushed for 7 TDs. He had the sixth-highest passing efficiency rating (111.3) in the MWC.
Cassady recorded 47 tackles (24 solo, 23 assists), including 7 tackles for losses and 3.0 sacks. He also had 5 pass break-ups.
O'Hara was second on the team with 101 tackles (35 solo, 66 assists), the 11th-highest total in school history. He also had 15 tackles for losses (second on the team) and 4.5 sacks (fourth on the team). O'Hara added 1 interception and 5 pass break-ups.
