The Lake Forest defense forced seven fumbles (recovered four) and six total turnovers, while led to 21 points in their 42-14 win over visiting Monmouth (0-2, 0-1) on Saturday. Monmouth managed just 267 total yards of offense (139 rushing) and Lake Forest sacked Monmouth quarterback Jon Baikie seven times. Eight different Foresters were credited with at least half a sack.
Freshman running back Jim Smith (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel High School) rushed for 109 yards and the Foresters rushed for 275 yards as a team. Quarterback Tom Dranger (Sauk Village, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.) connected on 4 of 8 passes for 130 yards, a score, and no interceptions.
Monmouth scored a touchdown on their opening possession, capped by a Baikie 2-yard touchdown run, but Lake Forest rattled off the game's next 35 points as they outscored the Scots 35-0 in the middle two periods.
Lake Forest upped their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference. Next week they will travel to Grinnell to take on the defending MWC champions.
