Grinnell Spoils Lake Forest Homecoming with 10-7 Overtime Win
Foresters Out-Gain Grinnell in Rushing and Passing 

LAKE FOREST, IL - Through a constant drizzle and on a muddy field, Grinnell College out-dualed Lake Forest College, 10-7 in overtime, on Saturday (September 23rd) at Farwell Field on Homecoming weekend at Lake Forest.

After holding Lake Forest on downs to start the overtime period, Grinnell marched to the Lake Forest seven-yard line on four straight Adam Wallace rushes, including an 11-yard run on their first play. John Godish then nailed a 22-yard field goal to give the Pioneers the win.

After a scoreless first half, Grinnell scored on their second drive of the third quarter. Wallace capped off a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run. He finished with 92 yards rushing on 29 carries. 

Lake Forest put together a long drive of their own to start the final quarter. The Foresters chewed up the first seven and a half minutes of the fourth quarter with a 75-yard, 15-play drive. Jim Smith (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel) scampered 15 yards for the game-tying score to set up overtime. Smith led his team with 69 yards rushing. He also added 44 yards receiving.

For the game, Lake Forest out-gained Grinnell in total offense, 296-219. Both teams were balanced between the run and pass, with Grinell gaining 112 rushing yards and 107 passing yards and Lake Forest putting up 144 yards rushing and 152 yards passing. 

LF quarterback Brad Cozzie (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel) finished with 127 yards on 9-of-20 passing. Grinnell's Shawn Sigler spread the ball to four different receivers and finished the day 14-of-28 for 107 yards. 

Grinnell's Matt Johnston and Zach Fletcher both recorded a game-high 13 tackles. Andy O'Hara (South Bend, IN/Riley) led the Foresters with 12 tackles, while Casey Urlacher (Lake Bluff, IL/Lovington (NM)) had nine tackles, including five solos and one for loss.

The game was marred by 10 fumbles, including seven by Lake Forest. But there was only one turnover in the game (a Lake Forest lost fumble).

Lake Forest fell to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Midwest Conference, while Grinnell improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the MWC.

The Foresters will return to action next week with a home contest with Beloit College on Saturday (September 30th) at 1:30.
