FORESTERS HANDED FIRST LOSS AT GRINNELL
In a battle of Midwest Conference leaders, Grinnell out-dualed Lake Forest 24-21 on Saturday, handing the Foresters their first loss of the 1999 season. The Pioneers, last year's MWC Champion and this year's pick to repeat, jumped out to an early 17-7 lead by scoring on their first three possessions. Freshman quarterback Shawn Sigler, replacing the injured All-American and usual starter Troy Dougherty, threw two touchdown passes in the opening quarter to give Grinnell the lead. Lake Forest pulled within 17-14 at the half on Tom Dranger's (Sauk Village, IL/Marian Catholic High School) second one-yard touchdown run of the afternoon. Dranger's second score came as time ran out in the second quarter.
The Foresters took their first and only lead of the day when freshman Jason Arendsee (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo H.S.) scored from five yards out and Pat Dunne (Chicago, IL/Marist H.S.) nailed the extra point at the 3:20 mark in the third quarter. Grinnell scored the go-ahead touchdown on an Alan Morrison two-yard run with 4:55 remaining.
For the game, Lake Forest out-rushed Grinnell 206-180, but allowed 255 yards passing compared to 171 of their own. Grinnell took advantage of three Forester penalties, each of which gave them first downs, and converted on 9 of 17 third down opportunities. Dranger finished the afternoon with 171 yards passing with 10 completions in 16 attempts. He had no interceptions and was sacked four times. Seniors Jamie Linton (Bridgeview, IL/Moraine Valley Community H.S.) and John Litscher (Lake Mills, WI/Lake Mills H.S.) each had solid days catching the football. Linton caught three passes for 82 yards and Litscher had four catches for 69 yards. Tyrome Bembry (Hamilton, OH/Culver Academy) led the team in rushing with 87 yards on 16 carries, while freshman Jim Smith (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel H.S.) rushed 9 times for 55 yards.
Lake Forest fell to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the MWC, while Grinnell is now 2-1, 2-0 in the MWC. Lake Forest will play their third road game of the season on Saturday, October 2nd, when they travel to Beloit.
