LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College softball team finally played its 2008 home opener Friday evening (April 18) but fell 6-1 to Robert Morris College. The Foresters then split a Midwest Conference South Division doubleheader with visiting Knox College on Saturday (April 19), falling 5-2 in the opening before routing the Prairie Fire 14-5 in five innings in game two. Lake Forest is now 12-10 overall on the season and 5-1 in league play. Robert Morris raised its record to 21-14 and Knox moved to 3-17 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Robert Morris took the lead with a pair of first-inning runs on Friday and then added four in the third.

Lake Forest’s only run of the contest came on a long home run by sophomore Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), her first of the season, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Knox also jumped out to an early lead in Saturday’s opener with a tally in the top of the first inning. The Foresters tied the game in the second when sophomore Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) led off with a single and later scored on a base hit by senior Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas).

The Prairie Fire, however, regained the advantage with two runs in the third and extended the margin with two more in the fourth.

In the sixth inning Rainey doubled in senior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), who reached on a one-out base hit, with what turned out to be the final run of the game.

The Foresters were the visiting team in game two and plated four in the top of the first inning. Junior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) led off the game with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community). After Moser stole second, Rainey drove in both runners with a single of her own. After a fielder’s choice, Norton belted her second home run of the season. Knox, however, pulled to within a run with three in the bottom of the first.

Lake Forest scored six runs in the third inning before making an out. Norton led off with a single and freshman Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo./Rifle) drove her in with the last of three straight walks. A Prairie Fire error brought home the second run and Michal’s first career grand slam broke the game open. It was her second home run of the season. Knox scored once in the bottom of the frame but still trailed 10-4.

Both teams scored in the fourth, the Foresters when sophomore Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) came home on an RBI-groundout by freshman Kaylee Gendrich (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North).

Rainey led off the fifth with a single and scored on Condon’s seventh home run of the year. The round-tripper was the 30th in her four seasons with the team and gave her 100 career RBI. Norton followed with her third base hit of the game and eventually scored the last run of the contest on a single by sophomore Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian).

Freshman Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) pitched the final four innings of the game to earn the victory. She also came on in relief in game one and allowed just two runs on four base hits in seven innings on the day.

Lake Forest will host two games against Judson University Monday (April 21) at 3:00 p.m. before playing doubleheaders at the University of Chicago and Carthage College at the same time the next two afternoons, respectively.
