CHICAGO, Ill. - The Forester softball team won three of four games on Monday and Tuesday (April 21-22) and is now 15-11 on the season. Lake Forest defeated visiting Wheaton College 13-5 in five innings and 8-0 in six frames on Monday before winning Tuesday’s opener at the University of Chicago 10-6 and falling 7-5 in game two.

Things did not start well for the home team against Wheaton, as the Thunder scored once in the second inning of Monday’s opener and twice in the third. The Foresters, however, turned things around with 11 runs on as many hits in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) had a pair of two-run singles in the inning and senior Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) plated two on her base hit. Sophomore Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) started the rally with a double and later singled in a run. Senior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), sophomore Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), and freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) each had an RBI-single and Moser added a second base hit in the frame.

Wheaton scored a pair of fourth-inning tallies but a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth by Condon drove in Moser and sophomore Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) with the game-ending runs.

Freshman Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) pitched the first four innings and earned the victory, evening her record on the season at 3-3. Senior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) pitched the fifth inning of the opener before hurling a two-hit shutout in game two. She struck out one without a walk and faced just 20 batters in the six-inning contest.

The Foresters scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Rainey singled in Michal and Moser in the first and, after advancing to second on the throw, came home on a base hit by Condon. Sophomore Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) led off the second with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Ruberg base hit. Michal followed with a double and the other two runs scored on an error and a fielder’s choice.

Neill belted her fifth home run of the season in the third inning. Condon tripled with one out in the sixth inning and scored the game-ending run on a base hit by Norton.

Chicago’s first hitter gave the home team an early lead with a leadoff homer in the opener. The Foresters took advantage of some defensive miscues in the third inning to score five times. After a leadoff walk and a two-base error, Rainey doubled in both runners. Another error allowed Condon to reach and Rainey to score. Sophomore Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) doubled in Condon and later scored on a wild pitch. It was Condon’s 100th career run scored, making her the only Forester to reach 100 runs and RBI.

The Maroons cut the Foresters’ lead to one with a pair of runs in the third inning and one in the fourth.

Lake Forest’s plated five in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Pinsonneault led off with a single, Ruberg walked, and Moser reached on a fielder’s choice that did not produce an out. A bases-loaded single by Rainey then scored two and Condon followed with a three-run homer.

Chicago scored the final two runs of the game off sophomore Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) in the sixth. She pitched all seven innings and raised her record to 6-2.

The Maroons got a leadoff homer for the second time on the day in game two but the Foresters responded with three runs in the top of the second. Pfund led off with a single and Pinsonneault walked with one out. Both advanced on a groundout and came home on a base hit by Michal, who scored on a Moser double.

Chicago tied the game with two in the third and both teams added one in the fourth. An error brought home Neill with the Foresters’ run after she led off with a single and advanced on a bunt and a groundout.

Condon belted her second round-tripper of the day and team-high ninth of the season in the fifth. It was her school record-tying 37th RBI of the year and turned out to be the visitors’ final run of the day. The Maroons plated three in the sixth for the win.

Lake Forest’s doubleheader at Carthage College on Wednesday (April 23) afternoon has been canceled so the team’s next contests will be Saturday afternoon (April 26) at 1:00 against visiting Grinnell College. It will be the team’s final Midwest Conference doubleheader of the season and the Foresters will have the opportunity to become the host for this year’s MWC Championship Tournament.
