Foresters Finish Regular Season with Sweep of Knox
Feeney ties single-season school record for doubles

Kristen Feeney had three hits and six RBI in game two.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester softball team hosted and swept Knox College in a Midwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday (April 24). Lake Forest won the opener 6-3 and prevailed 7-4 in game two to finish the regular season with a 23-11 overall record and an 11-3 mark in conference play. The Prairie Fire fell to 10-20-1 overall and 5-8 in the MWC.

The day did not start as well as it ended for the Foresters, whose two errors led to three unearned runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Two walks, a sacrifice, and a wild pitch scored junior Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) in the bottom of the frame to make the score 3-1.

Lake Forest tied the game with a two-run third inning. Mildebrath reached on an error and scored on freshman Erin Watts's (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) team-high third home run of the year.

The home team finally took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Kristen Proffitt (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) doubled with one out, advanced to third on a single by junior Hannah Starck (Aurora, IL/Aurora West), and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mildebrath.

The Foresters tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Watts walked and stole her team-high eighth base of the season. A misplayed ground ball later in the inning scored runners from second and third.

Senior pitcher Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) settled down after the first inning. She surrendered just three base hits the rest of the way, struck out two, and walked one. She raised her record on the season to 12-4 and lowered her earned run average to 1.03.

Game two started slower but picked up steam in the third inning. Lake Forest scored twice in the top of the frame on a triple by sophomore Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech), double by Watts, and single by junior Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township). Knox got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning on a walk, sacrifice, and double.

Two hit batsmen and an error loaded the bases in the fifth for Feeney, who hit a grand slam to right-center field. A three-run home run in the bottom of the inning, however brought Knox back to within two.

Feeney became just the second player in team history to drive in as many as six runs in a game when her school record-tying double in the seventh plated Watts. The Prairie Fire had the tying run at the plate in the bottom if the inning but sophomore Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) escaped for her fourth win of the year. Just one of the four Knox runs was earned, lowering her ERA to 1.35.

Lake Forest will host the double-elimination MWC Championship Tournament next weekend (April 30-May 1). The Foresters will take on Lawrence University in the first round.
