KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Lake Forest College softball team won three of four games during the first two days (Mach 9-10) of the 2008 season. The Foresters defeated Husson College 8-1 and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 16-0 in five innings on Sunday and knocked off Baldwin-Wallace College 6-5 Monday morning before falling 12-2 in five innings to Rhode Island College later in the day.

Husson took the early lead in the opener on a leadoff home run in the first inning. The Foresters took advantage of a pair of errors to plate two in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth sophomore Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) drove in two on her first career home run and senior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) belted a grand slam later in the frame to break the game open.

Senior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) allowed four base hits and struck out a career-high five batters in the complete game victory. Freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) had a pair of base hits in her debut and junior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) scored twice.

Back-to-back doubles by sophomores Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) gave the Foresters the lead in the second inning against the Coast Guard Academy. Condon and Pfund each hit a home run during a five-run third inning and added another round-tripper during a 10-run fourth. It was Condon’s third career two-homer game.

Sophomore Jeannette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) allowed just two base hits in four innings and freshman Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) debuted with a hitless and scoreless fifth. Rainey finished the game with three base hits and three runs scored. Norton had two doubles, two runs scored, and two driven in. Both of Pfund’s home runs came with two runners on base, giving her a career-high six RBI.

Rainey had a run-scoring single and Pfund drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Foresters a 2-0 first-inning lead against Baldwin-Wallace. Sophomore Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) led off the second with a walk, stole second, and later beat the throw home on Moser’s fielder’s choice ground ball. Sophomore Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) singled in Moser, who scored twice in the game, later in the inning. Baldwin-Wallace plated one in the third inning and two in the fifth. Norton had an RBI-single and Pfund a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-3 and Baldwin-Wallace scored twice in the seventh.

Andresen earned her second victory in as many starts. Galasek came in with one out and the tying run on base in the seventh and, after walking the first batter, retired the next two for her first career save. Michal, Neill, Rainey, and Norton each had two of the team’s 12 base hits – all singles – in the game.

Two errors helped Rhode Island score twice in the first inning. Pinsonneault and Michal singled with one out in the top of the third and both runners scored on an error by the left fielder. Aided by three errors, Rhode Island tallied nine unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Michal and Rainey lead the team with six base hits apiece and Michal has scored five times. Pfund has driven in 10 runs and Condon already has 14 total bases. Grant has a team-best 0.72 earned run average.

After taking Tuesday off, the Foresters will play six more times in the next three days (March 12-14) at the Rebel Spring Games. The team will take on Ramapo College of New Jersey at 1:00 p.m. and Emerson College at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Thursday morning’s games will be against Hiram College at 9:00 and Marietta College at 11:00. Finally, the squad will play against Marian College (Indiana) at 3:00 Friday afternoon and Washington College at 5:00.
