KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Lake Forest College softball team split a pair of contests on each of their first two days of competition at the Rebel Spring Games over the weekend (March 10-11). The Foresters fell 8-3 to Indiana Wesleyan University and defeated the U.S. Merchant Marines 4-3 on Saturday. On Sunday Lake Forest dropped a 5-4 decision to Manhattanville College before knocking off Concordia University (Wis.) 7-5.

The Foresters were out-hit 9-4 in the opener against Indiana Wesleyan. Among the four base hits was the first of freshman Tracy Rainey’s (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) career and a double by senior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, Ill./Normal). A third-inning groundout by senior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) drove in a run, the school record-tying 100th of her career.

Indiana Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and another in the second. After the Foresters came back with a pair in the third, the Wildcats regained a three-run lead with two in the fourth. Lake Forest scored one in the fifth and Indiana Wesleyan closed out the scoring with three in the sixth.

Junior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) and senior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) were each 3-for-3 and sophomore Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) had a pair of base hits in the victory over the U.S. Merchant Marines. Michal scored twice and Jeziorny drove in a pair. Watts had a double and Condon a triple in the contest. Freshman Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) recorded her first career hit and classmate Jeannette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) debuted by surrendering just three unearned runs on five base hits over seven innings.

Lake Forest took a 3-0 lead with a run in the third and two more in the fifth. The Mariners tied the game with two in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh. Michal singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Condon tripled her in for the winning run.

The Foresters had nine base hits, including three by freshman Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and two doubles by Rainey, in the loss to Manhattanville. Freshman Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) also recorded her first career hit and Rainey drove in two. Michal had a pair of stolen bases.

The Foresters scored twice in the top of the second and two more in the fifth. Manhattanville cut the lead in half with two in the sixth and won the game with three in the bottom of the seventh.

Condon had two base hits, including a three-run home run, against Concordia. Rainey drove in two more runs – both on sacrifice flies – and Michal stole two more bases. Jeziorny and sophomore Alex Charron (Calgary, Alb./Lord Beaverbrook) doubled in the game and Pfund had a triple. Andresen came on in relief and gave up just an unearned run on two hits in four innings to earn the victory.

After Lake Forest scored four runs in the bottom of the first, Concordia plated four in the second. The Foresters regained the lead with one in the second and added one in both the third and fifth. The Falcons scored the final run of the game in the seventh.

After a day off, the Foresters will take on Kean University and UW-River Falls on Tuesday (March 13), SUNY Geneseo and top-ranked Ithaca College on Wednesday (March 13), and McDaniel College and Denison University on Thursday (March 15).
