Three Foresters Named First Team All-MWC South, Three Second Team

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The 2008 All-Midwest Conference softball teams were released Tuesday (May 6) and six Lake Forest College players were listed for the South Division, including three on the First Team.

Senior outfielder and first baseman Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) earned First Team honors for the third straight season after leading the conference and setting a school record with 42 runs batted in. She also matched her own team record with a league-high 11 home runs. In addition, she finished second in the MWC with 77 total bases and fourth with a .726 slugging percentage.

Sophomore shortstop Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) was a First Team selection after earning Second Team honors a year ago. Rainey batted a team-high .383 on the season, led the conference with 35 runs scored and 110 fielding assists, and tied for the league lead with 44 base hits. She was tied for second in the MWC behind Condon with 32 RBI and tied for third with 11 doubles.

Pitcher Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was named to the First Team in her freshman season. She finished the year 6-5 with a 3.74 earned run average and led the Foresters with 82.1 innings pitched. The right-hander was 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA, the third-best mark in the league, in five appearances during conference play.

Lake Forest’s Second Team selections were sophomores Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci), and Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian). Norton, a third baseman, batted .347 this season with three home runs and 27 runs batted in and ranked second in the league with a dozen doubles. Pfund, a catcher and second baseman, batted .344 on the year, tied for second in the league with 32 RBI and third with seven home runs and eight runners caught stealing. She also ranked fifth with 60 total bases. Neill, a first baseman and catcher, posted a .298 batting average and led the conference with 237 defensive putouts. She also tied for third in the league with seven home runs and ranked fifth with 28 RBI.

The Foresters finished the year with an overall record of 21-14 and claimed the MWC South Division title by winning seven of eight league games. Lake Forest also hosted the 2008 MWC Championship Tournament, where they advanced to the championship game for the seventh straight season.
