The 2008-09 season will be the Foresters' third with Dan Shelley as the team's head coach.

The 2007-08 Forester men placed third and the women sixth at the Midwest Conference Championship Meet. It was the men's team's 25th consecutive top-three finish in the league. Individual champions included MWC Diver of the Year Maggie Rezac (1M diving, 3M diving) on the women's side and Michael Ojdana (100- and 200-freestyle) and Michael Mackin (100- and 200-backstroke) on the men's. In addition, the Lake Forest men placed first in the 200-, 400-, and 800-freestyle relays.

Lake Forest swimmers and divers have now claimed six individual conference titles on both the men's and women's sides since Shelley took over as head coach. The men's relay teams have also captued six of a possible ten conference championships and Rezac has earned All-American honors four times.

Rezac went on to finish as the national runner-up in 1-meter diving and third off the 3-meter board, giving Lake Forest a 28th-place finish at the Women's NCAA Division III Championship Meet.

Shelley came to Lake Forest from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent five seasons as an assistant coach. He worked with both the men's and women's programs, directed swimmers in each distance group, and was also involved in coordinating the Bears' dryland and weight training programs.

Prior to working at Brown, Shelley was an assistant coach and admissions representative for a year at Hope College, his alma mater. Both the men's and women's teams placed second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association that year and finished fourth and 14th in the nation, respectively. Shelley began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant for two seasons at Penn State University, where the Nittany Lions captured the 1999 Big Ten title.

During his eight year tenure as an assistant coach he guided many student athletes to tremendous success. Included in his previous coaching positions are 38 conference champions in the Big Ten, Ivy League, and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, 13 All-Americans, three National Champions and three Olympians. In addition Shelley has worked some of the top camps in the country, including Texas and Penn State.

While a student-athlete at Hope, Shelley earned NCAA Division III All-American honors in 1996 and 1998. He was also the 1998 MIAA champion in the 50-yard freestyle. He graduated from Hope in 1998.
