Men Win Fourth MWC Championship in Five Years
Foresters win 9 of 20 events

GRINNELL, IA - Although they were not the largest team at the Midwest Conference Championship meet this weekend (February 9-11th), the Lake Forest College men's swimming & diving team certainly was the best, outscoring host and second-place Grinnell College 531-454. Lawrence University, last year's team champion, finished third with 441 points. The top three teams were followed by Knox College (253), Carroll College (133), Ripon College (131) and Beloit College (72).

The top performance among the 12 swimmers and 2 divers came from sophomore Eric Boarini (Wadsworth, IL), who captured first place in all three of his individual events and three of the four relays in which he participated. His times of 21.56 in the 50-yard freestyle (3rd), 47.92 in the 100-yard freestyle (5th) and 1:44.82 in the 200-yard freestyle all rank in the top five in school history.

Lake Forest took home three other first-place finishes in the individual events. After finishing fourth in the morning prelims, freshman Brady Lowdermilk (Parker, CO) led the Foresters' sweep of the top four places in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.84. Senior Steve Williams (Leawood, KS) took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.23 and swam the fifth-fastest 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.40) in school history, despite finishing second in the meet. Sophomore Anthony Laurino (Wichita, KS) out-swam all competitors in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:56.24.

In the five relays, Lake Forest ended up with three first-place finishes and a pair of seconds. The winning 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Joe Isaacs (Shorewood, MN), junior Joe Zemaitis (Scottsdale, AZ), Williams and Boarini finished in 1:29.01. Lowdermilk, Williams, Isaacs and Boarini made up the winning 400-yard medley relay team, whose final time was 3:38.57. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Brandon Johnson (Phoenix, AZ), Zemaitis, Laurino and Boarini had a first-place time of 7:10.36, less than one second behind the school record 1999 team, which also included Zemaitis. The Foresters scored 148 of a possible 160 points in the relay events. The next highest relay point total was Lawrence's 126.

Lake Forest was also the conference champion in 1999, 1998, 1997, 1993, 1987 and 1978 and hold half of the league's 20 event records. There is only one senior and one junior on this year's squad so the future looks just as bright as the present for the Foresters.
