LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College Athletic Director Jackie Slaats announced Friday (June 16) that Dan Shelley has accepted the position of Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach at Lake Forest College. Shelley replaces seven-year head coach Alec Webster, who was recently hired to direct the program at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.

“I’m very pleased to have Coach Shelley join our staff,” Slaats begins. “His background in Division III athletics and his more recent experience at an Ivy League institution make him a perfect fit for our program.”

Shelley spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He worked with both the men’s and women’s programs, directed swimmers in each distance group, and was also involved in coordinating the Bears’ dryland and weight training programs.

Prior to working at Brown, Shelley was an assistant coach and admissions representative for a year at Hope College, his alma mater. Both the men’s and women’s teams placed second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association that year and finished fourth and 14th in the nation, respectively. Shelley began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant for two seasons at Penn State University, where the Nittany Lions captured the 1999 Big Ten title.

While a student-athlete at Hope, Shelley earned NCAA Division III All-American honors in 1996 and 1998. He was also the 1998 MIAA champion in the 50-yard freestyle.

“I am very excited to join the Lake Forest College community and lead both programs into the future,” begins Shelley. “Lake Forest has a very strong swimming and diving tradition and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. I am truly looking forward to building on that tradition and taking the Forester program to new heights.”
