SARAH FRANTZ, COACH BETH PIER RECEIVE LEAGUE'S TOP HONORS
For the second time in three years, the Lake Forest volleyball program not only claimed the Midwest Conference Championship, but also swept the conference's top awards - Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. In 1997, Head Coach Beth Pier won Coach of the Year honors and Anna Panighetti (1994-97) was named the Player of the Year. In 1999, Pier was again named Coach of the Year and Sarah Frantz (Lake Geneva, WI/Badger H.S.) was selected as the league's top player.
This season, Pier became the winningest coach in school history. During her six-year tenure at Lake Forest, she has compiled a 105-54 record, including a 19-8 mark in the MWC regular season. Pier guided the Foresters to the school's first-ever Midwest Conference Championship in 1997, to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history this season, and ranks among the 30 winningest NCAA Division III active coaches in the nation.
Frantz, a 5-6 junior setter, was a three-time MWC Player of the Week selection this fall. For the season, she collected 1,096 assists, the second highest total in school history. She now has the second, third, and fourth highest single season totals at Lake Forest. Included in her 1999 season assists total were 121 assists in three matches at the MWC Tournament and 104 assists in two matches at the NCAA Tournament. Frantz, who became the school's all-time leader for career assists early this season, now has 3,059 assists for her career. She also holds school records for assists in a four-game match (65) and five-game match (74). She broke the four-match record this season versus Grinnell. Also this season, she moved into second place for career aces with 161, just 7 behind current leader Anna Panighetti (1994-97). Frantz had a team-high 63 aces this season, the third-highest single season total in school history. In the single season assists category, Frantz holds the third, fifth, and eighth slots. Her 213 digs this season boosted her career total to 565, seventh in the school record books.
