WHITEWATER, WI - The Midwest Conference Champion Forester volleyball team played a familiar opponent in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament on Thursday (November 8th). For the third time this season Lake Forest was defeated by Benedictine University, although this time the Eagle victory did not come easily.

After Benedictine took the first game 30-26, the two teams played a 76-point marathon-like game that Benedictine eventually won, 39-37. Lake Forest had five match point opportunities and fought off the first four chances Benedictine had to win the game.

The Foresters, despite being down two games to zero, showed no signs of giving up and took game three, 30-21, and game four, 30-25. Lake Forest jumped ahead in game five 6-1 and led by four points (12-8) while needing just three more to take the match. The Eagles scored three in a row before the Foresters scored to make it 13-11. Benedictine scored four more in a row to win game five and the match.

Lake Forest's leader in kills was Stephanie Reinboldt (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic) with a season-high 24, just one short of the school record. Reinboldt also chipped in three aces and 9 digs. Another senior, Angela Lagerman (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls), tallied 11 kills in 21 attempts with a single error for a .476 hitting percentage, the best of anyone in the match. A third Forester senior, setter Leslie Boyle (Chicago Heights, IL/Marian Catholic), tallied a career-high 66 assists, 3 aces and 13 digs.

The three seniors finish their Lake Forest careers with their names at the top of the school record books. Reinboldt is the all-time leader in kills, Lagerman in blocks and Boyle in digs. A fourth senior, Chrissy Laurine (Richmond, IL/Richmond-Burton), finishes as one of just two players among the top eight in the program's history in aces, kills, blocks and digs.

Next year the Foresters will be looking for their fourth consecutive Midwest Conference Championship and their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. They lose four starters to graduation, but return their 2001 leader in aces and digs, as well as a number of part-time players ready to fill in the gaps.
