PIER GETS CAREER WIN #100; BECOMES ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH

What a night for Lake Forest College Head Volleyball Coach Beth Pier. The Foresters 15-3, 15-5, 15-13 win over cross-town rival Barat College on Wednesday (Oct. 27) was not only Pier's 100th career victory, but moved her into the top spot for all-time volleyball coaching victories at Lake Forest College. She surpassed current Athletic Director and Head Women's Basketball Coach Jackie Slaats, who compiled a career mark of 99-76 in six seasons as head volleyball coach from 1986-91. Pier, in her sixth season, now has a career mark of 100-52 for a winning percentage of .658, also the highest in school history. She is one of the 30th winningest active volleyball coaches in the nation and has never had a losing season. Pier guided the Foresters to the school's first Midwest Conference Championship in 1997. Her teams have never won less than 14 matches in a season and tonight's victory gave this year's edition of the Foresters a 14-9 overall record.
The victory over Barat was the ninth straight in the all-time series for Lake Forest. Their only loss came in 1978, the first year of volleyball at Lake Forest. Although the Foresters were riding an eight-match winning streak going into tonight's match, it was Coach Pier's first meeting with Barat and the school's first since 1992, when Lake Forest won 3-0. But the Foresters picked up right where they left off seven years ago with their 3-0 win on Wednesday evening behind 12 kills and a .588 hitting percentage by sophomore Stephanie Reinboldt (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic High School) and 34 assists by junior Sarah Frantz (Lake Geneva, WI/Badger H.S.). Senior Jessie Griffin (Beecher, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.) added 8 kills and 5 aces, while sophomore Angela Lagerman (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls H.S.) had 6 blocks.
Lake Forest will close out their regular season schedule with home matches versus Illinois Wesleyan on Friday (Oct. 29) and Illinois College on Saturday (Oct. 30). A win on Saturday would give the Foresters a perfect 4-0 mark within the MWC South Division and secure the top seed in the MWC Championship Tournament on November 5-6. Lake Forest won the 1997 title.
