September 16, 2006 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Foresters Split Four Matches at Chicago’s Gargoyle Classic
Senior Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) led Lake Forest with 16 kills and added four blocks against Dubuque. Junior Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was next with 15 kills and five of her team-high six blocks were solos. Sophomore Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and junior Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) chipped in with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior Kendra Casey (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) tallied 35 assists and four aces. Sophomore Lisa Sturgill (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan South) led the Foresters with 26 digs, Martin and freshman Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn./Visitation) had 18, and Cretacci added 12. Balcerzak set a new school record with 28 kills against Defiance and added three aces and five solo blocks. Baich had 16 kills and five blocks. Casey recorded nine kills, 49 assists, five aces, and 12 digs. Sturgill led the team with 32 digs and Grauman and Martin had 18 and 17, respectively. Balcerzak and Baich reached double figures in kills again against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with 13 and 10, respectively. Casey recorded 31 assists and a pair of aces. Sturgill had 21 digs, Grauman 12, and Martin 10. Cretacci led the Foresters with seven kills against Eau Claire, who entered the weekend as the nation’s sixth-ranked team. Other team leaders included Grauman with four aces, Casey with 14 assists, Martin with 13 digs, and Baich with five blocks. Balcerzak finished the event with 62 kills and 14 blocks. Baich, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 45 kills and 20 blocks. Casey tallied 129 assists and a dozen aces. Sturgill registered 89 digs. Lake Forest will play at Carthage College, the #24 team in the country, Monday (September 18) night at 7:00. The Foresters will travel to Grinnell College next weekend and begin Midwest Conference play against Beloit College, Ripon College, and Carroll College at the first MWC Crossover of the season.
