Lake Forest Wins Two of Three Matches at Thunder Classic
Foresters defeat Concordia and Rockford, fall to North Central

WHEATON, IL - The Forester volleyball team claimed a pair of victories in three matches Saturday (September 17) at Wheaton College’s Thunder Classic. Lake Forest defeated Concordia University (IL) 30-20, 30-15, 30-28 and Rockford College 30-21, 30-24, 30-20 before falling to North Central College 30-20, 24-30, 30-22, 28-30, 15-9. The Foresters are now 7-4 on the season.

Senior Meghan Miller (Williams Bay, WI/Williams Bay) led the team with 14 kills and 21 digs against Concordia. She committed just one attack error and posted a .419 hitting percentage. Sophomore Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) and junior Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) also reached double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior Kendra Casey (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) tallied 44 assists and 13 digs in the match and tied Miller with a team-high three aces. Baich recorded five blocks and sophomore Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) had four to go along with 14 digs.

The team’s .358 hitting percentage was easily its highest mark of the year and its 52 assists were just two shy of the school record for a three-game match.

Martin and Baich each had 10 kills and just one error in the victory over Rockford and combined for a .474 hitting percentage. Miller also added 10 digs and Baich chipped in with three blocks. Other team-highs included Balcerzak’s four aces, Casey’s 25 assists, and Miller’s 12 digs.

Miller set new career-highs against North Central with 15 kills and 37 digs. Balcerzak was next on the squad with 14 kills and Baich had 12 to go along with five blocks. Casey recorded 47 assists and both Martin and freshman Lisa Sturgill (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan South) eclipsed the 30-dig mark with 33 and 31, respectively. The Foresters’ 130 digs in the match broke the previous school record by one.

Lake Forest will take on Concordia Tuesday (September 20) night in River Forest, Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
