FRANTZ BECOMES SCHOOL'S CAREER ASSISTS LEADER
Just four matches into her junior season, Lake Forest College setter Sarah Frantz (Lake Geneva, WI/Badger H.S.) has become the school's all-time assists leader.  Frantz surpassed the old mark of 2,071, set by Kasey Staples, during the Foresters' final match at the Elmhurst Invitational over the weekend.  She entered the tournament needing 108 assists for the record and finished with 112 during the two-day event.  Head Coach Beth Pier commented, "It is a great accomplishment for Sarah.  She's been a starter since she set foot on campus and has been extremely durable.  Also, she really loves to play this game.  She's got a positive attitude, so when things aren't going so well, she'll keep plugging away until they turn around."
Frantz finished her freshman season, in which she was the starting setter on the school's first-ever conference championship team, with 996 assists.  In 1998, she totaled 967 assists.  Her 1997 assist total was the second highest single season total in school history and her 1998 total is third on the school's leaders list.  Staples and Frantz are the only Foresters with more than 2,000 career assists.  Frantz also holds the school record for assists in a five-game match with 74 versus Chadron State in 1997.
Also during this year's Elmhurst Invite, Frantz recorded three aces, which moved her into third on the Forester's career list with 101, surpassing Michelle Vandigo, who finished with 100 career aces.
The next school career record likely to fall is total blocks.  Senior Mary Gerke (Bend, OR/Moutain View H.S.) entered the 1999 season needing 11 to break the record.  Gerke also has a legitimate chance to break career marks for solo blocks (needed 17entering the season) and games played (needed 75 entering the season).
The Foresters suffered from inconsistent play at this weekend's tournament.  After a season opening three-game sweep of Wheaton, Lake Forest lost three consecutive matches to UW-Oshkosh, St. Mary's (MN) and Marian.  Coach Pier added, "I could not have been happier with our first match.  We stepped onto the court and controlled the match from the outset.  From there it was a matter of serving and passing.  When those two aspects of our game were on, we played well, but when they weren't, we were in trouble.  Overall I like our new, quicker offense and it worked well when we passed well."
Lake Forest will look to get back on track Tuesday when they host Carthage at 7:00 p.m., whom they defeated in three games last season.
