FORESTERS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT; MWC, GRINNELL AWAITS
After starting the season with a mediocre 4-5
record and being plagued by inconsistently, the Lake Forest volleyball
team has rattled off four straight wins, including a 3-0 (15-12, 15-10,
15-9) win at Judson on Tuesday night. Lake Forest, the 1997 Midwest Conference
Champions, will open the 1999 MWC season this Saturday when they travel
to Grinnell, last year's MWC runner-up who are 6-3 this season. "It should
be a great match," Head Coach Beth Pier commented.
"The fact that two of the top three teams from the pre-season poll will
be opening our conference season is exciting. I'm expecting a hard-fought,
long match. For us to come out of it with a win, would be a great way to
start our MWC season." Grinnell was picked to finish second and Lake Forest
tied for third in the MWC coaches' pre-season poll.
On Tuesday, junior Sarah
Frantz (Lake Geneva, WI/Badger High School) led the team with 46 assists
and 3 aces. "Sarah did an extremely good job of mixing up her sets and
our quick offense seemed to be tough for them to adjust to," Pier commented.
"We often had hitters attacking with only one blocker or no blockers there,
which was the result of Sarah's good decision making."
Sophomore Stephanie
Reinboldt (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic H.S.) had 15 kills and
senior Mary Gerke (Bend, OR/Mountain View H.S.)
added 12 kills, 3 blocks, and 11 digs. Pier also singled out senior Jessie
Griffin for her performance Tuesday, "Not only did Jessie lead the
team in digs, but she had a great match in areas that don't show up statistically.
She recovered a lot of balls off their block and kept the ball alive when
we thought it would hit the floor." Griffin had 13 digs and 11 kills. |
