Lake Forest Wins Two of Three at MWC Crossover I
Foresters defeat Beloit and Ripon, fall to Carroll

Grinnell, Iowa - The Forester volleyball team began the Midwest Conference portion of its 2006 schedule with two victories in three matches at the MWC Crossover I at Grinnell College over the weekend (September 23-24). Lake Forest is now 7-10 overall this season.

The team began the weekend with a 30-24, 30-22, 30-32, 30-32, 15-12 win over Beloit College Saturday afternoon. Junior Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the Foresters with 20 kills and tied for the team lead with five blocks. She committed just three hitting errors in the match and posted a .447 hitting percentage. Senior Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) was next on the squad with 16 kills and she added three aces and three blocks. Sophomore Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) had a season-high 14 kills and matched Baich’s five blocks. Senior Kendra Casey (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) matched her season-high with 49 assists. Sophomore Lisa Sturgill (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan South) led all players with 31 digs and junior Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) added 23.

Lake Forest defeated Ripon College 30-28, 31-29, 28-30, 30-27 later on Saturday. Balcerzak led the squad with 22 kills and added four aces. Baich pounded out 14 kills and tacked on three aces and four blocks. Casey posted another 49 saves and Sturgill tallied 29 digs. Martin and freshman Lindsey Grauman (St. Paul, Minn./Visitation) added 13 digs.

The Foresters fell 30-26, 30-24, 28-30, 27-30, 17-15 to Carroll College on Sunday. Baich and Balcerzak led the team again with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Baich added eight blocks while Balcerzak had two blocks and a pair of aces. Casey registered 38 assists and Sturgill had 32 digs. Martin and Grauman each added 22 digs.

Statistical team leaders for the weekend included Balcerzak’s 51 kills and nine aces, Casey’s 136 assists, Sturgill’s 92 digs, and Baich’s 17 blocks.

Lake Forest will host Marian College Thursday (September 28) night in the team’s Homecoming match.
