Foresters Win Three of Five at MWC Crossover, Pier Earns 200th Victory
Baich sets school record for blocks in a match, Miller makes All-Tournament Team

BELOIT, WI - The Lake Forest College volleyball team competed in the Midwest Conference Crossover Tournament at Beloit College over the weekend (September 25-26) and won three of five matches. The Foresters defeated Ripon College 30-22, 30-18, 26-30, 30-22 before falling in five games to both St. Norbert College (30-28, 19-30, 30-23, 27-30, 15-12) and Beloit College (23-30, 26-30, 30-27, 30-28, 15-12) on Saturday. On Sunday, the team claimed three-game victories over Lawrence University (30-22, 30-18, 30-22) and Carroll College (30-24, 30-24, 30-21) to raise its overall record to 10-8 and its league mark to 3-2.

Four reached double figures in kills against Ripon, led by senior Amy Krueger’s (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) 17. Senior DeAnna Bauer (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) had 13 kills and sophomores Savanna Shumaker (Bristol, WI/ Westosha Central) and Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) added 10. Junior Meghan Miller (Williams Bay, WI/Williams Bay), who was later named to the All-Tournament Team, recorded a career-high 34 digs in the match and Krueger had 24. Bauer served up a team-high four aces, freshman Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) led the squad with four blocks, and senior Andrea Krueger (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) had 52 assists.

Andrea Krueger set a career-high with 63 assists against St. Norbert and Amy Krueger led all players with 24 kills. Balcerzak and Baich each had 14 kills and Balcerzak added three aces and six blocks. Bauer recorded 10 kills, as did Miller, whose 34 digs matched the career-high she set just hours earlier. Freshman Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) had 15 digs and a team-high four aces.

Balcerzak and Baich led the team with 17 kills apiece and combined for 11 blocks against Beloit. Miller had 13 kills and team-highs with four aces and 25 digs. Bauer added 11 kills and 10 digs and Shumaker had 10 and nine, respectively. Andrea Krueger tallied 52 assists and 13 digs.

Bauer, Shumaker, and Balcerzak tied for match-high honors with nine kills each against Lawrence. Balcerzak’s nine aces, Amy Krueger’s 12 digs, and Andrea Krueger’s 25 assists were also team-highs.

Amy Krueger recorded 15 digs and a team-high 10 kills in the win over Carroll. Miller and Andrea Krueger led all players with 26 digs and 39 assists, respectively, and Nicole Baich set a school record with 11 blocks in the match, despite its length of just three games. The victory was the 200th for Forester head coach Beth Pier, whose career record now stands at 200-107.

Lake Forest will play its first MWC South Division match of the season at home against Knox College Friday (October 1) night at 7:00. Knox is 4-13 overall and was 1-4 at the Crossover.
