Lake Forest Wins Two of Four Matches, Place Fifth at Hornet Invitational
Foresters fall twice on Friday, win twice on Saturday

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Forester volleyball team began the 2005 season at Kalamazoo College’s Hornet Invitational over the weekend (September 2-3). Lake Forest fell 30-24, 30-27, 30-22 to Anderson University and 30-23, 22-30, 30-25, 30-23 to Adrian College on Friday. The team rebounded to defeat Manchester College 30-22, 30-22, 30-26 and host Kalamazoo 30-24, 28-30, 20-30, 30-19, 15-12 on Saturday to place fifth out of eight teams. Adrian defeated Franklin College in the championship match.

Junior Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) and sophomore Nicole Baich (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy) each recorded a team-high eight kills in the opening match against Anderson. Balcerzak added four aces and senior Meghan Miller (Williams Bay, WI/Williams Bay) led the squad with 19 digs.

Baich set a new career high with 22 kills against Adrian and chipped in with three blocks. Fellow sophomore Merissa Martin’s (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) 10 kills were also a career high. Freshman Lisa Sturgill (Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan South High) led the team with 22 digs and junior Kendra Casey (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) tallied 46 assists.

Balcerzak had 11 aces and a pair of solo blocks in the win over Manchester. Senior Molly Smith (Watsonville, CA/Watsonville) led the Foresters with three blocks, Sturgill had 10 digs, and Casey recorded 25 assists.

Balcerzak pounded out a career-high 20 kills in the grueling victory over Kalamazoo. She also had two aces and three blocks. Baich was next on the squad with 14 kills and recorded three blocks as well. Sturgill led the way with 18 digs, Miller had 17, and Martin added 14. Casey matched her season-high with 46 assists.

Baich led the Foresters with 52 kills on the weekend and Balcerzak had 47 as well as a team-high seven aces and eight blocks. Casey tallied 145 assists and Sturgill recorded 63 digs.

Lake Forest will play its first home match of the season Tuesday (September 6) at 7:00 p.m. against Wheaton College. The Foresters will also play at Marian College on Thursday (September 8).
