Prior to her return to Lake Forest, Zwiefelhofer spent two seasons (1997-98) at Mount Senario College in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, as both an assistant basketball (two seasons) and volleyball (one season) coach. Before her time at Mount Senario, Zwiefelhofer spent one season (1996-97) as a student assistant on the Lake Forest College women's basketball coaching staff while she completed her degree.

During her undergraduate days at Lake Forest, Zwiefelhofer was an All-Midwest Conference basketball performer and led the league in rebounding the only season she played for the Foresters (1995-96). She helped the team to a 16-6 overall record.

Zwiefelhofer transferred to Lake Forest College after three years at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. While at Northland, she was twice named the volleyball team's Most Valuable Player and helped the team to the NSCAA National Championship her freshman year. On the Northland basketball court, Zwiefelhofer was a two-time team captain, Most Valuable Player and NAIA Division II All-region team member. She also finished second on the school's career scoring list with over 1,000 points.
